L.O.G.S. for Rabbits

Rabbit Hutcheries & Rabbit Areas

A practical, lower-maintenance base for rabbit areas

Rabbit keeping should not mean an ongoing problem with smell, wet bedding and repeated cleaning. L.O.G.S. adapts the same layered biological ground-system principle used for goat and sheep areas into a carefully scaled solution for suitable rabbit hutches, colonies and family rabbit spaces.

The goal is to create a carbon-rich, biologically active base beneath the rabbits that is designed to help manage manure, urine and moisture below the surface, rather than leaving it to accumulate in a shallow bedding layer.

A carefully scaled living base

Like the goat and sheep system, a rabbit L.O.G.S. installation uses a lower timber structure, coarse woodchips, suitable mineral material and biological activation. The layers work together to provide structure, moisture-holding capacity and a living environment in which organic material can be gradually processed.

The rabbit version is designed around the particular needs of the hutch or rabbit area: the rabbits’ safety, the floor and containment system, ventilation, weather protection, cleaning access and the number of rabbits using the space.

Designed for suitable protected rabbit spaces

Rabbit areas need to be dry, well ventilated and protected from harsh weather. L.O.G.S. can be considered beneath suitable hutches and enclosed rabbit areas, particularly where a family, breeder or animal centre wants to reduce the cleaning burden and manage smell more effectively.

It is not a replacement for proper rabbit housing, safe mesh or flooring, shade, ventilation, clean water, good feed or daily observation. The L.O.G.S. ground system works beneath these essentials.

What it is designed to help with

  • Smell associated with manure and urine below a rabbit enclosure
  • Saturated bedding and wet patches
  • Frequent cleaning and removal of dirty material
  • A rabbit area that becomes difficult for a family or staff to maintain

In one family rabbit hutch installation, the owner reported no noticeable smell and very little maintenance over an extended period.

Each hutch and rabbit set-up is different, so this is an observed result, not a guarantee.

Animal numbers, space and maintenance

Rabbit capacity cannot be set by one simple number. Breed, age, colony or individual housing, welfare requirements, hutch layout and whether rabbits have free access to the area all matter. L.O.G.S. assesses rabbit numbers and usable floor area for each hutchery or rabbit area before recommending a design. The system must never be used to justify overcrowding.

Rabbit L.O.G.S. systems are low-maintenance, not no-maintenance. Maintenance may include a biological refresh spray approximately twice a year, occasional coarse woodchip top-ups as the carbon material settles, and attention to any concentrated wet or high-use patch.

The system is built with an allowance for natural settling. A small top-up may be useful after several months, or when one area has settled more than the rest.

Is L.O.G.S. right for your rabbit area?

Send photographs of the hutch or enclosure, the number and type of rabbits, how the area is used, and the main problem you are dealing with. L.O.G.S. can then advise whether a carefully scaled layered base may be suitable.
